Through the San Diego Freeway Service Patrol (FSP) and
Call Box Program, the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG), California
Department of Transportation (Caltrans), and California Highway Patrol (CHP) work
together to provide free motorist aid on major freeways in the San Diego region.
Freeway Service Patrol is a free service that improves safety for stranded motorists
and reduces traffic congestion during peak hours. A roving fleet of tow trucks and
pickup trucks travel on select local freeways to provide roadside assistance to
commuters. In Fiscal Year 2018, FSP assisted more than 56,000 motorists per year.
For motorist aid during FSP service hours, call 511 and say “Roadside Assistance” or use any roadside call
box. When the FSP is not on duty, you will be connected with a call center to reach
other roadside assistance operators. View the service area map, service hours, frequently asked questions, and learn more about the Freeway Service Patrol.
The Call Box Program is a free motorist aid service designed to
help travelers who experience vehicle problems on the highway. Call boxes are self-contained,
solar-powered cellular telephones with voice communication to a call center. When
motorists open the yellow call box, pick up the phone, and press the red “call”
button, they are automatically connected to call center staff. Motorists may always call 511 from a cell phone to be connected to the same motorist aid call center.
